A potentially costly problem was experienced with the T-Mobile G1 today when attempting to set a SIM PIN number. This can be done by clicking the Menu button when on the home page, then entering Security & location, Set up SIM card lock , Change PIN code. On setting the new PIN the G1 reports ‘SIM card is PUK-Locked. Please contact Customer Care.’, a reboot does not clear the problem. To get the PUK number for the individual phone T-Mobile customer services had to be contacted on 07946557672 (UK). The adviser said a new SIM had to be sent out at a cost of £10.00. Sceptical, we held back to have a search for a solution online. Doing so we found a solution that worked and avoided the charge. It was as follows:

Related error: ‘SIM card is PUK-Locked. Please contact Customer Care.’

To enter a PUK code and unblock the PIN, follow these steps:

IMPORTANT: You must call T-Mobile Customer Care for the PUK code. Entering the wrong code can permanently damage your SIM card.

1. Tap Emergency Call to go to the dialer pad.

2. Enter **05*PUK*new pin*new pin# , replacing PUK with your applicable PUK code.

NOTE: Do not type 1234 as your new pin number it will not work. You may type any other 4 digit number.

3. The device displays the message, ‘Your SIM card has been unblocked. Your phone is unlocking…’

NOTE: When entering in the **05*PUK*new pin*new pin#, you enter the information in the emergency dialer. If you do not tap “emergency calls only” it will not allow you to enter the unlock code to unlock the device.
